Five Tips for Overcoming Public Speaking Nerves

Your mouth is dry, heart palpitating, and knees knocking. You go into panic, facing a dreaded public speaking assignment.

It doesn't have to be so.

These five tips will give you some strategies to overcome those symptoms and have the butterflies flying in formation.

1. Deep breathing will pull in oxygen. Adrenalin, secreted to help you deal with the fear brought on by little doubts, causes breaths to become shallow, or causes you to hold your breath. Deep breathing will help your brain work to capacity, and forcing the slower pace will quell the panic.

2. Bluff. Stand tall, with shoulders back and chest out. Smile. Even though you don't feel happy or confident, do it anyway. You will look confident and your body will fool your brain into thinking it is confident. This really works!!

3. Keep you mouth and throat hydrated. Plan to keep a drink on hand while you are speaking., though this sounds impossible. Visualising how you will use it if you need it, and calling up the audacity to do such a thing will carry across to your attitude as you take your place to speak, placing your glass just where you need it to be.

4. Adrenalin sends the blood rushing to the fight/flight centres of your brain at the base of the skull. Place your hand on your forehead and press gently on the bony points. This will bring the blood to the parts of the brain that need it to present your speech best.

5. Know you are prepared. Obviously this depends on actually being prepared, so take every opportunity in the days leading up to the speech to prepare your material. Be familiar with the structure of the presentation, and the ideas to use. Memorise the most important parts, and the parts you are frightened of forgetting. I would memorise the opening of the speech and in the moments before presenting it, would reassure myself that I knew that part, and that would lead on to the rest. It worked!!

Poor Boy - a Declamation Piece

Look at me!!! I am part of the masses... the facet of society many so often push around... Why can't they ever stop to think... that, I am human too... that I, too, feel like them... Why can't you answer me??? You must have something in mind... Why can't you answer me??? I know you must have something in mind... Where is their sense of morality??? They trampled upon me as if I was trash... I never did them any wrong!!! Was it a sin I committed when I came to this world as a poor boy??? A poor boy... yes that's what I am... A state of being I didn't even choose at the first place. Was it a sin I committed, to be born like this?? Now tell me!!! Did you ever have the right to choose your status in life when you were born??? Think!!! Before you condemn me... Do I ever have a choice?

I am deprived of all the chances in life... I am looked down upon by people as someone who is too dirty... too smelly... too poor... but I have a heart... Yes!!! I have a golden heart... For every coin I get out of begging helps my younger siblings to survive. The money I earn goes a long way to feed my family... How about you??? How do you feed your family??? Are you 100% sure you work decent enough to earn more??? Are you sure that the money you earned didn't come from a dirty strategy other corrupt politicians used to do to gain power? Can you honestly look at your child straight in the eye true to your heart's core and with a clear conscience?? Have you ever been aware that the money you use to feed your family is an outcome of your hard labor and decent job you can always be proud of??? WHY DID YOU SUDDENLY BECOME QUIET??? WHAT IS IN YOUR MIND NOW?? Tell me!!! Come on, tell me!!!

Huh!!! You have good clothes, you never experienced sleeping without a roof, you eat good food, you enjoy the comforts of life... But, somewhere deep in your mind, your conscience haunts you... Yes... you will never sleep good... Within your subconscious mind, your guilty conscience still haunts you, constantly reminding you about your evil ways... Wow... And you still think you are clean???

How to Measure Leadership Skills and Increase Productivity

In today's economy, the most important thing for any professional to focus on is increasing effectiveness to make the most of what you have. Sounds easy enough, but in today's world, professionals have to be ready to walk the walk, when they have already talked the talk. How do we measure something that is always changing and improving?

The first step in defining leadership is to define the characteristics of an effective leader. Effective leaders consistently exhibit certain characteristics. By understanding what these characteristics are, we can model these same behaviors. Fortunately, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner's book The Leadership Challenge has studied over a million cases of effective leaders. As a result of their research, we now know that the top characteristics of an effective leader are honesty, competency, being forward-focused and inspiring.

Now that we have something to measure, how do we go about measuring it? The most popular method is through the use of inventories or surveys that ask others to rate a person in a variety of categories. The subject does a self evaluation on how they are doing and those that work with them (supervisors, coworkers, customers or anyone else that has contact with the subject). After all the data is compiled, we can then take a tangible look at what was once a subjective area.

How to Measure Leadership Skills and Increase Productivity

One of the best examples of this type of inventory is the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) by Kouzes and Posner. After over 25 years of research, they have composed a relatively easy way to compile an enormous amount of data in an easy to understand graph. Once complete, the baseline for leadership skills has been set. From that point on, it is a matter of working to improve the areas that scored the lowest on the inventory. In order to track progress, or in some cases lack of progress, one can re-administer the LPI to get an "update" on how their leadership skills are doing. Once armed with this powerful information, it is imperative that the results are interpreted and communicated very carefully. The Lake Wobegon Effect (http://psychology.wikia.com/wiki/Lake_Wobegon_effect) tells us that the human tendency is to overestimate one's achievements and abilities in relation to others. In our case, it is normal and expected for most people to expect their results to be higher than they really are. It is highly recommended that you choose someone that is a certified facilitator to work people through this section. Without trained facilitation, a person may end up dismissing years of proven research due to a blow to their ego. With proper guidance, the growth of any one individual can be almost limitless. After all, who has met someone that is the best at everything?

By following these guidelines, one can not only measure the leadership skills of an individual, but is armed with a solid development plan based on years of research. The results include increased leadership skills in all levels, an increase in job satisfaction, employee retention and host of others. Public Speaking - Ways to Deliver Your Speech

There are 4 possible ways to deliver your speech in public speaking. Each way has its' pros and cons. The method that s picked will depend on your circumstances. However, there is one way that is the most effective in the majority of cases.

The 4 ways to deliver your speech are:

1. Read it to the audience

In this way the speech is written out and read aloud word for word to the audience. When giving your first speeches this method is attractive because the speaker does not rely on their memory due to the security of the speech. This does ensure that nothing is forgotten and the speech is accurate. The disadvantage is that you lose your personal appeal because your head is bowed reading. And it is difficult to talk expressively and maintain a conversational aspect to your delivery. However it is useful in political and highly controversial speeches to read aloud to prevent misquotes or being sued.

2. Memorize and deliver to your audience

The advantage of this method is that you can employ phrases that you wouldn't normally use and you are not tied down to reading your speech. You can look at your audience and move around. The difficulty with this approach is if you forget your "lines" and then struggle to determine where you are up to. Also the natural conversational quality of your delivery is difficult to maintain and it is often stiff and stilted.

3. Impromptu Speech

In an impromptu speech the speaker has not prepared a speech and is delivering his thoughts and word on the spur of the moment. This method is very flexible but rarely achieves the quality of a well prepared speech. It is best avoided if you can. But if you think you may be called on to say a few words it is handy to have a few "lines" prepared to avoid any embarrassments. Most experienced speakers have developed some reliable responses to use when they are called upon to make impromptu remarks.

4. Prepare a speaking outline and memorize the ideas

This approach is known as the extemporaneous method. The speech can be delivered with or without notes. When thoroughly prepared (which can include writing your speech in full initially) and practiced there is little need for notes. This is the easiest way for the speaker to achieve the ability to speak in a natural conversational manner. It also gives the ability to adapt the speech for any unexpected events. It does take more time and preparation than the other ways outlined here.

When starting out, it is tempting to read your speech or memorize and recite it word for word. Be careful with these methods because it is difficult to connect with the audience.

When called on for impromptu remarks ensure you have a few memorized responses (an emergency kit). The preferred method is to prepare thoroughly for your speech and memorize the ideas. Your speech has the potential to be more natural and to be more effective in achieving your purpose.

Public Speaking - Roast Humor and Insults

Being roasted is an honor, but you must be careful to honor people while you are roasting them during a public speaking engagement. Joke about things that are obviously untrue, then exaggerate them to make them more obvious. Or, you can outrageously exaggerate things that are true.

When choosing the butt of a roast joke or story, pick big targets. Never make fun of a small target (janitor, secretary, etc.). Make fun of the boss. He or she is still the boss after all the teasing and will look like a great sport for going along with it.

Members of 'in' groups can joke about their peers and insult each other all they want. Bob Hope made fun of Ronald Reagan. Everyone knew they were buddies.

Public Speaking - Roast Humor and Insults

If you widely spread an insult or collection of insults, the group can laugh together. No one is individually embarrassed. The same remarks aimed at an individual removed from the cohesive influence of the group might cause someone to get upset.

Always clear your comments IN ADVANCE! Unless you are participating in a full-blown roast program, always make fun of yourself first. If you kid yourself first, the audience will be more receptive when you kid them. Here are some roast examples:

To an AT&T executive:

If a Martian called Ed's office to contact earth, he'd try to sell them on the benefits of our new 800 service.

Keep remarks focused on unimportant things that can't be damaging!

Folks we are here tonight to Roast Joe. I'm particularly happy to be here because I can now say in public all the things I've been saying behind his back. He/she is a man/woman of the world . . . and you know what bad shape the world is in.

Insult about areas of recognized strength and superiority!

To a great family man and/or community leader:

Joe's (neighbors/business associates/preacher, etc.,) all say what a wonderful couple he and his wife make . . . if it wasn't for Joe.

To a well-known philanthropist:

He is a man of rare gifts . . . he hasn't given any in years.

At a program with a long head table with lots of speakers, an emcee might say:

The emcee's job is not to be wise or witty. In fact, it is his job to appear dull so that the speakers on the program will shine in comparison. Tonight it looks like I'm going to have to rise to new heights of boredom.

To the audience the emcee or speaker might say:

I'm glad to be here tonight to look into your faces. . . . And God knows there are some faces here that need looking into.

Public Speaking - How to Introduce Speakers

Many clubs and organisations rotate the important role of introducing other speakers at their meetings. If you are relatively inexperienced at public speaking this is a great opportunity to practice and build your confidence.

When introducing other speakers you are aiming to create a favourable environment for them to present. If the right words are chosen you can put the audience into a receptive mood to listen. On the other hand a poor choice can leave the audience bored and restless.

Introductions are as different as the individuals involved. In presenting public speakers, each requires a separate approach, in the same way each hole in golf course is played a little differently from the other seventeen holes. Whether you get a high platform rating or a low golf score depends on the approach you chose.

The following tips will help you choose your approach to boost your platform score:

Plan Your Introductions

Introduction deserve more than impromptu fumbling. Learn about the speaker you are about to introduce. If you don't know the speaker, discover as much as you can about the speaker by getting to know them. Try to answer the following questions;

What is their area of expertise?
What subject are they speaking on?
What do others say about them?
What business line are they in?

Plan carefully how you are going to introduce them to their audience and you will put them and their audience in "sync" with each other.

Length of Your Introduction

Be brief like good literature -talk long enough to cover the details but be short enough to leave the audience wanting more. Your job is to build up the speaker not to give the speech or to make yourself the centre of attention. A custom to keep in mind is that the more well known the speaker the shorter the introduction needs to be.

Keep It Simple and Sincere

Do not over complicate your introductory speech. By keeping it simple you will not confuse the audience. Mean what you say about the speaker; do not exaggerate the speaker's experience or ability. You have the opportunity to spur on the modest speaker with a few well chosen words.

Structure of the Introduction

A useful outline to use to structure your introduction is
- Opening remarks - start with an upbeat remark
- Biographical details about the speaker - who the speaker is?
- Topic of his speech - be brief - do not give the speech for him
- Thank the speaker and clearly pronounce his name
